Sequim boys drop Renton 73-52, one win from regionals

(University Place) -- The Sequim High Wolves boys basketball team is one win away from a berth in the regionals.
The Wolves beat the Renton Indians 73-52 Tuesday night in 2A West Central District consolation play at Curtis High School.
Sequim improves to 16-7 overall and will meet the Olympic Trojans on Thursday night at Curtis in a loser out contest at 7:45.
Olympic clipped the Clover Park Warriors 61-59 Tuesday in the preliminary game.
Sequim and Olympic split their regular season series, the Trojans winning 56-48 in Sequim on December 19th and the Wolves returning the favor 51-39 on January 23rd in Silverdale.
The winner of Thursday's Olympic - Sequim contest meets either Lindbergh or Sammamish on Saturday night to determine final district seedings into the regionals.
Sequim led 7-0 and had a 21-8 lead 5 minutes into the game after a triple by Adrian Espinoza.
Vance Willis had a tremendous start for the Wolves with 14 of his 17 points in the first period.
However, Renton scored the final 7 points in the opening frame after two-pointers by Krishon Coles and one of three triples by Shandon Powell, closing to within 25-20.
Coles led Renton with 13 and Powell had 12.
Sequim hoops by Jackson Oliver and Alex Barry pushed the Wolves ahead 32-25, but Renton fought back with 5 straight tallies and the Seamount League club trailed just 32-30 at intermission.
Sequim came out of the locker room determined and Barry scored two straight hoops, connecting on 11 of his 18 points in the second half.
The Wolves upped Renton 15-12 in the third period, leading 47-42 going to the final 8 minutes.
Sequim had a 12-4 run in the first 4:10 of final period, forging ahead 59-46 on Vance Willis' trey.
Oliver had game-high honors with 20 and splashed a pair of threes in the final stanza.
Renton continued to foul late in the contest, long after the outcome was determined and the Wolves dropped 13 of 22 free throws in final quarter, 21 of 33 for the game.
Sequim finished the contest on a 26-10 streak, with a 41-22 advantage in the second half.
Ben Comer paced Renton with 7 tallies and Abdisamad Ali added 5.
Alex Rutherford had 6 for Sequim, Dusty Bates added 5 and Payton Glasser had 4.
The Wolves had 11 turnovers, while Renton had 18 miscues.
Renton finished the season with an 11-11 overall record.
In other boys 2A consolation bracket games Tuesday, Sammamish eliminated North Kitsap 71-53 and Lindbergh came back to beat Liberty 44-41.
