Sequim boys beat North 69-62, Lady Vikings win 52-36

(Sequim) -- Sequim erased a 7-point North Kitsap halftime lead with an 18-6 third quarter run and defeated the Vikings 69-62 at Rick Kaps Gym Tuesday night.
The loss knocked North Kitsap into an tie for the Olympic League 2A Division lead with Olympic High, each with 9-2 circuit marks, a half-game ahead of Sequim.
The Vikings led by as many as 9 points early before the Wolves trimmed the deficit to 16-13 after the first period.
Alex Barry had 2 triples in the opening frame on the way to a game-high 22 points.
North opened up an 11-point bulge at 29-18 with 3:58 to go before halftime on a trey by 6-10 center Calvin Dennis.
Dennis had 11 of his 19 markers in the second period, but Jackson Oliver kept the Wolves close with 3 of his 4 triples -- finishing with 12 tallies.
The Vikings went to intermission ahead 34-27.
10-0 Sequim run puts Wolves ahead in third quarter
Sequim got a tremendous third quarter from 6-8 center Josh McConnaughey, who connected on 7 of his 8 points, cutting North's lead to 37-34 on a basket with 4:42 left in the period, starting a 10-0 Wolves spurt.
Moments later, McConnaughey got inside and drew the fourth foul on Dennis, drawing protests from the North sideline that resulted in a bench technical foul.
McConnaughey hit two free throws, followed by Alex Barry's 2 technical shots that put the Wolves ahead for good at 38-37.
Barry hit another basket on the ensuing possession, then Alex Rutherford got a layup, increasing the Sequim lead to 42-37.
Cole Rabedeaux, who had 19 for North, cut it to 42-39 with 1:11 left in the third to stop the Sequim run.
The Wolves were ahead 45-40 at the third buzzer and increased the lead to 8 on two occasions early in the final stanza.
Sequim holds final quarter lead
Rabedeaux got one of his 6 fourth quarter baskets with 3:47 left that chopped the Sequim advantage to 56-53.
The Wolves continued to get clutch hoops, Barry scoring a three-point play with 3:30 left, making it 59-53 Wolves.
Dennis hit his final hoop with 2:20 to go, cutting it to 59-55, but Bates answered with a triple with 1:36 remaining to put Sequim up 62-55.
Rabedeaux got a putback cutting it to five, Bates missed a one-and-one, then Rabedeaux chopped it to 3 with a basket with 1:03 left -- Sequim 62-59.
Bates canned two freebies with :53 seconds left, followed by single free throws by McConnaughey (on Dennis' 5th foul with 38 seconds left) and Vance Willis that made it 66-59 with 31 ticks to go.
Brooks Ellingsen, who had 14 for North, bombed in a triple with 19 seconds to go that cut the affair to 66-62, before Bates and Espinoza sealed the deal for the Wolves with 3 more charity shots.
Sequim hit 8 of 12 freebies in the final period.
Sequim boys idle until District on February 13th
North Kitsap (9-2 in league and 14-5 overall) hosts Bremerton Friday night.
Sequim (9-3 in league and 14-6 overall) increased its winning streak to seven games, taking its ninth victory in the past 10 games.
The Wolves are idle on the league schedule Friday and has a district opener slated for Thursday, February 13th, most likely at Lindbergh.
The official scorebook logged Sequim with 69 points, while the gymnasium scoreboard registered an extra point in the final seconds of the contest, causing incorrect reports of a 70-62 score.
Sequim girls lose at NK 52-36
In the girls game at Poulsbo, North Kitsap beat Sequim 52-36. No details were reported.
