Foster eliminates Sequim boys 53-45

(Tacoma) -- A smothering man-to-man defense by the Foster Bulldogs spelled doom for the Sequim High Wolves season in Monday's 2A West Central District basketball game.
Foster held Sequim to just nine first-half points, then moved on with a 53-45 victory over the Wolves and a chance to play Kingston Tuesday night for a spot in the regionals Friday.
Cedric Cooper scored 6 of his game-high 17 markers in the first quarter as the Bulldogs forged out to a 15-5 advantage in the loser out contest at Foss High School.
The teams combined for just 12 tallies in the second period and Foster went to the locker room up 23-9 at intermission.
The Bulldogs managed to extend the bulge to 20 points in the third period on two occasions before Sequim's Gabe Carter and Corbin Webb hit triples to close the gap to 12 -- 35-23 -- going into the final stanza.
Sequim treys by Tim Guan and Jayson Brocklesby narrowed the margin to single digits at 35-27.
Any hopes of a Wolves comeback were quashed by a 3-ball from Foster's Gabe Gutierrez and a Cooper slash to the rack, pushing the Bulldogs lead back out to double digits.
Gutierrez paced Foster with 10 markers and Jimaun Horton scored 8. Frank Catelli, Brocklesby and Webb shared team-high honors for Sequim with 8 points apiece.
It was the final prep hoops appearance for Sequim's Catelli, Webb and Evan Hill.
Sequim finished with a 16-9 record.
