February 15th, 2011 - 10:50pm
(Tacoma) -- Olympic High's Shannon Jackson and Jalyn Halstead scored 17 points apiece as the Trojans beat the Sequim Wolves 66-54 last night in a West Central District girls basketball tournament opener at Foss High School.
Olympic advances to the district quarterfinals Thursday at 6 against the third-seeded Port Angeles Roughriders.
Sequim will await either Franklin Pierce, Eatonville or Foster at 11 Saturday morning at Curtis High School.
The Lady Wolves will need a win Saturday and Monday to earn the district's fifth seed to the regionals.
Sequim kept the game close in the first quarter as the Wolves' Lea Hopson had 7 of her game-high 22 points in the period, mostly on long, quick drives to the basket.
Olympic had a 14-11 advantage after the first break and 31-27 at halftime.
Halstead nailed a pair of triple early in the second half, pushing the Olympic lead to nine at 37-29.
Sequim fought back and close to within five at 39-34 on a pair of Hopson hoops and scores by Columbia Haupt and Haleigh Harrison.
Harrison connected for 14 points for Sequim, while Taylor Balkan and Rylleigh Zbaraschuk added 7 points apiece.
The five-point margin was as close as the Wolves would get the rest of the way as the Trojans wrapped it up with 11 of 20 fourth quarter freebies.
