BOYS PREP DISTRICT BASKETBALL: Kingston 71, Sequim 62

February 18th, 2011 - 8:23pm
(Tacoma) -- George Hill scored 25 points and Sam Byers chipped in 14 as the Kingston Buccaneers defeated the Sequim Wolves 71-62 in a 2A West Central District boys basketball tournament quarterfinal at Foss High School Friday night.
Kingston qualified for next weekend's regionals with the victory and will play the winner of the Port Angeles - Fife game in the semifinals Saturday night.
Sequim needs a victory Saturday at 2:45 against Lindbergh and another win Monday to garner the district's 6th seed into the regionals.
Kingston's Hill knocked down 5 triples in the contest, including a pair in the opening quarter as the Bucs got out to a 17-11 advantage at the first buzzer.
Sequim looked for penetration into the paint by Jayson Brocklesby and Gabe Carter in the first half and managed to get the Bucs' Sam Byers and Zane Ravenholt into foul trouble with 3 each at intermission.
Kingston led at the half 33-26.
Brocklesby had a career-high 26 points for the Wolves, including 12 in the final period and shot 6 for 11 from the foul line.
The Buccaneers kept Byers and Ravenholt on the bench for the opening 5 minutes of the third quarter and reserve Brady Sundquist answered the inside call with 6 points in the period.
A technical foul on Sequim for a substitute violation resulted in a four-point swing to Kingston after George Hill sank a pair of freebies and a basket on the ensuing possession as the Bucs increased their lead to 43-33.
The Wolves trailed by 11 going to the fourth quarter -- 52-41 -- but a six point Sequim run cut it to 52-47 on a Brocklesby basket.
Sequim managed to get within five on two more occasions, but the Bucs answered every challenge.
Byers had 7 critical fourth quarter points on the inside for Kingston.
Zane Ravenholt paced the Buccaneers with 11 and KT Deam had 8.
