2016 Football Game 9 - Sequim 37, Kingston 17

Sequim football downs Kingston 37-17

October 29th, 2016 - 12:00 am

(Kingston) -- Riley Cowan threw 5 touchdown passes for the second consecutive game as the Sequim Wolves beat the Kingston Buccaneers 37-17 Friday night.

The Wolves completed the regular season with a 7-2 overall record and earned second place in the Olympic League 2A football standings at 5-1.

Sequim will have a district playoff game against the Eatonville Cruisers Saturday, November 5th at Silverdale Stadium with the kickoff slated for 7 p.m.

The Cruisers (7-2) beat the Washington Patriots 21-13 Friday night in a South Puget Sound League divisional crossover game.

Early drives come up empty

Both teams were thwarted in their opening drives, Kingston moving into Wolves territory before turning ball over on downs at the Sequim 28.

The Wolves pushed deep into Buccaneer country before Paul Johnson intercepted a fourth down Riley Cowan pass inside the 10 and returned it to the Kingston 34.

Sequim stopped Kingston after a Bucs holding penalty and got the ball back at its own 45.

Gavin Velarde got the first of his two touchdown receptions on a 55-yarder to put the Wolves ahead with 4:40 left in the first period.

Cowan made the first of his five PATs for a 7-0 Sequim lead.

Long drive for 3, short jaunt for 7

Kingston responded with a 15-play, 62-yard march to a booming 42-yard field goal by senior Damon Ledezma with 8:55 remaining in the first half, closing the deficit to 7-3.

After watching the Buccaneers chew up 7 minutes and 34 seconds of game clock, the Sequim offense wasted little time in expanding their lead.

A four-play, 77-yard drive started with a 15-yard run by Tyler Conn, followed by an amazing diving catch by Payton Glasser for 28 yards to the Bucs 34.

Rudy Whitehead caught a 20-yarder to the Kingston 14, then Glasser scored Cowan's second TD pass, making it 14-3 Wolves with 7:45 left until intermission.

The Bucs go to the Bag of Tricks

Kingston threatened again on eight rushes and two passes, stalling at the Sequim 12.

The Bucs lined up for a field goal, but a fake fizzled after the officials ruled that holder John Jones' knee was down when he flipped the ball to the kicker Damon Ledemza, turning the ball over to Sequim at its own 20.

Cowan punted from the Sequim 48 and the ball was downed at the Kingston 1 with 49 seconds before halftime.

On Kingston's third play, a fumble by quarterback John Jones rolled back into the end zone and was recovered by the Buccaneers -- ruled a safety for Sequim -- boosting the score to 16-3 Wolves at intermission.

Wolves offense clunks then clicks

Sequim opened the second half and drove to the Kingston 2, where Cowan's 4th down sneak came up short of a first down.

The Bucs fumbled back to Sequim two plays later at the Kingston 17, but Wolves stalled again, turning the ball back to the Buccaneers on fourth down at the 28.

Sequim stayed patient and scored on its next 2 possessions, both drives lasting just 4 plays.

Gavin Velarde touched pay dirt on a 39-yard screen pass, complete with a slew of broken tackles that increased Sequim's advantage to 23-3 with 6:10 left in the third quarter.

Kingston fumbled at its own 23 and Cowan found Glasser in the end zone on a 24-yard scoring strike that pushed the lead to 30-3 at the 1:37 mark of the third frame.

Kingston scores twice in final stanza

The Buccaneers' Nick Waxon got behind the Sequim defense and pulled in a 28-yard TD pass from John Jones with 11:08 remaining to edge Kingston closer at 30-10.

The Wolves answered again with an 8-play, 63-yard journey concluded with a 32-yard Cowan bomb to Kyler Rollness with 8:19 to go.

Kingston's Paul Johnson scored against the Sequim reserves with 31 seconds left on a 5-yard run for the final margin of 37-17.

Game Notes:

Kingston celebrated 10 seniors in a pre-game ceremony -- Anderson Crawford, Skyler Fulton, Simon Glintborg, Brett Heaps, Noel Issa, Paul Johnson, Damon Ledezma, Owen Maxwell and Wiktor Niemirski.
