2016 Football Game 8 - Sequim 49, Port Angeles 9

Sequim wins Rainshadow Rumble 49-9 over Port Angeles

October 22nd, 2016 - 01:00 am

(Sequim) -- Sequim's Gavin Velarde scored 4 touchdowns and broke 2 school records as the Wolves dropped the Port Angeles Roughriders for the second consecutive year in the Rainshadow Rumble, 49-9.

Velarde had 7 catches for 238 yards and 3 touchdown receptions (39, 64 and 75), plus an 83-yard punt return.

Sequim (6-2 overall and 4-1 in Olympic League 2A play) harassed Port Angeles quarterback Matthew Warner all night long, sacking him 6 times and forcing 5 Rider turnovers on 3 fumbles, an interception and a turnover on downs.

Port Angeles (0-8 overall and 0-5 in Olympic League 2A play) was limited to 213 total yards, with just 79 rushing hashes on 34 attempts.

Record setting night for Velarde

Velarde, a junior, came into the contest tied with Tyler Forshaw (2009-11) for top spot on Sequim's all-time receptions list with 82 and needed 19 hashes to overtake Forshaw (1,222) for Most Receiving Yards.

After a Port Angeles fumble on the game's second play was recovered by Michael Larsen at the PA 13, Velarde got the career catch record with number 83 on a 5-yard gain from Riley Cowan.

Two plays later, Cowan connected with Kyler Rollness on a slant for a 3-yard TD and the Wolves led 7-0 with 9:25 to go in the first period.

Cowan completed 17 of 29 passes for 351 yards and 5 touchdowns, both career-highs.

The record setter for Most Receiving Yards in Sequim history came 10 plays into an 85-yard Wolves march as Velarde took a pass down the right sideline and blew past defenders for 39 yards and a touchdown.

Riley Cowan's extra point made it 14-0 Sequim with 3:03 in the opening frame.

The Riders strike back

Port Angeles quarterback Matthew Warner opened a drive with a nimble 11-yard scramble for a first down at the Riders 45, then was sacked for a 6-yard loss by Michael Larsen.

On the following play, Warner threw a jump ball up the right sideline for Garrett Edwards, who made the grab near the Sequim 40, spun out of a tackle attempt and rumbled into the end zone for a 61-yard pass-and-run combo.

The extra point cut the Sequim lead in half, 14-7, with 1:47 left in the first quarter.

Warner connected on 10 of 18 passes for 134 yards and one score.

He was limited to 13 yards on 19 rushing attempts. Edwards led the Rider receivers with 76 yards on 3 catches.

Sequim had a first-and-goal at the Port Angeles 9, but Easton Joslin sliced in front of Kyler Rollness on a slant pattern at the goal line for a Port Angeles interception.

The drive stalled and the Riders were forced to punt back to Sequim.

Velarde scores again . . .

On the first Wolves play, Velarde took a short screen and rambled 64 yards to pay dirt, the second of his 4 touchdowns that put Sequim ahead 21-7 with 8:15 to go until halftime.

Port Angeles got possession back with 3:18 left and drove for 9 plays before turning the ball over on downs to Sequim at the Wolves 38 at the 1:16 mark.

On 3rd-and-17 from the Sequim 25, Velarde took another Cowan screen pass 75 yards for the backbreaking score and the Wolves went to the locker room ahead 28-7.

Wolves pull away in 3rd quarter

In the third quarter, the Riders were 8 plays into a drive when a fumble was recovered by Sequim's Hayden Gresli at the Wolves 43.

Sequim had a quick 4-play drive, started with a 36-yard counter by Velarde to the PA 7.

Three snaps later, Cowan found Payton Glasser in the left corner of the end zone for 7 yards.

After an officials' discussion, a pass interference penalty on Port Angeles was declined and Sequim led 35-7 with 4:45 left in the third period.

Sequim capped another drive after a 29-yard strike from Cowan to Glasser moved the pigskin to the Port Angeles 6.

Tyler Conn got the call on the dive from 6 yards as the Wolves had a 42-7 advantage after 3 quarters.

Rider drive stymied by red zone fumble

Port Angeles started its best drive of the second half at the Rider 17.

Aided by 41 yards in Sequim penalties (pass interference, unsportsmanlike conduct and a facemask), PA had a first down at the Wolves 11.

On second down, Trevor Shumway motored 9 yards to the Sequim 2, but a fumble on the next snap was recovered by the Wolves' Jesse Schleve at the 1.

Shumway led the Roughrider ball packers with 39 yards on 12 carries.

Sequim was penalized for a personal foul in the end zone to start its drive, which by rule, resulted in a 2-point safety for Port Angeles, making the score 42-9 with 8:11 remaining in the game.

Port Angeles was forced to punt and Velarde was not to be denied on the return.

The speedster took the ball at his own 17 and scampered to the left sideline, juking out the final defender near the Riders 40 and scoring with 5:56 left.

Sequim led 49-9 and reserves played out the final minutes of the 40-point mercy rule running clock.
