(Coupeville) -- The football Battle of the Wolves went to Sequim High Friday night, beating Coupeville 40-18 on Whidbey Island.
The penalty-filled affair featured a combined 25 flags for 244 yards.
Coupeville tallied first on a 27-yard field goal by Joel Walstad, as the hosts led 3-0 with 6:31 left in the opening stanza.
Mark Feeney had a pair of short touchdown runs in the first half and Chris Whitaker returned an interception 85 yards for a pick-six TD just 8 seconds before halftime, as Sequim (2-0) went to the locker room ahead 27-3 at intermission.
Senior quarterback Miguel Moroles, the WIAA Class 2A Student-Athlete of the Week, threw for an 11-yard TD pass to Bailey Earley in the second period and ran 5 yards for another score in the third quarter as Sequim forged ahead 34-3.
Coupeville (1-1) fought on as quarterback Joel Walstad connected with mercurial running back Josh Bayne on an 11-yard TD pass, closing the deficit to 34-10 with 3:04 left in the third quarter.
On Sequim's next drive, Ian Dennis rambled down the sideline 39 yards with a pass from Moroles, but a Coupeville defender managed to knock the ball away at the 1-yard line with the pigskin passing over the goal line and through the end zone.
The officials ruled a touchback, giving Coupeville possession at their own 20.
Coupeville closed within 16 points with 8:23 remaining after Lathom Kelley ran 5 yards for a touchdown, 34-18.
Coupeville recovered the ensuing kickoff at its own 47. The Sequim defense responded to the challenge as Walstad's pass on 4th-and-4 from the Sequim 22 fell incomplete with 5:48 left.
Sequim played ball control until speedy freshman Gavin Velarde broke loose on a jet sweep, turning on the afterburners for a 59-yard scoring sprint and a 40-18 Sequim advantage.
Sequim was flagged 16 times for 159 yards, Coupeville 9 for 85.
Sequim opens Olympic League 2A division play Friday, hosting Kingston, while Coupeville hosts Chimacum in both schools Olympic 1A division debut.
