2017 Football Game 9 - Sequim 48, Kingston 6

(Sequim) - Gavin Velarde scored 32 points, including three touchdown passes from Riley Cowan, a 12-yard TD run, a 76-yard interception return and a 2-point conversion, as the Sequim Wolves tuned up for the district playoffs with a 48-6 romp over the winless Kingston Buccaneers Friday night.

Gavin Velarde

Velarde had 6 catches for 229 yards, including a picture-perfect 85-yard bomb in the second quarter that matched the second longest TD pass in Sequim football history.

Cowan was razor-sharp, completing 10 of 15 passes for 267 yards and 3 scores, with 27 yards rushing and a TD.

Sequim (6-3) opens the playoffs Friday at Fife (8-1), after the Trojans suffered their first loss of the season  against Steilacoom 52-27 Friday in a matchup of South Puget Sound League 2A division winners.

The Fife - Sequim contest will be played Friday at 7 p.m. in the stadium at Fife High School.

One play = six points

After the Kingston offense started the contest with a 3-and-out possession, the Wolves took over at their own 35.

On the first snap, Velarde went deep and Cowan cashed in for a 65-yard touchdown just a minute and a half into the game.

Hayden Gresli got the 2-point run and Sequim was ahead 8-0.

The Buccaneers drove into Sequim territory and faced 4th-and-10 from the Wolves 19.  Velarde intercepted quarterback Kanikki Hale's pass to end the visitor's threat.

After a deliberate, time-consuming ground attack last week against Port Angeles, Sequim took to the air Friday night, throwing on its first 12 scrimmage plays.

A 33-yard Cowan screen pass to Hayden Gresli got the Wolves down to the Kingston 25, but the drive fizzled and a 4th down pass to the end zone fell incomplete, turning the ball back to the Bucs at their own 34 with 2:34 left in the first quarter.

Kingston's best offensive drive of the game, a 15-play effort that was aided by 20 yards of Sequim penalties, including a 15-yard personal foul for a horse-collar tackle, took 7:41 off the game clock.

A 10-yard pass from Hale to Nick Waxon gave Kingston a first-and-goal at the Sequim 1.

But the Buccaneers went backwards, instead forward to the end zone.

Fullback Leif Whalen was held for no gain on second down and was stuffed for a 4-yard loss on the third down.

On 4th-and-goal from the 4, Hale's pass into the front of the end zone to William Dixon was broken up by Cody Bell with 6:53 to go in the first half.

Three snaps later from the Sequim 15, Velarde had single coverage on a vertical pattern up the left side of the Wolves 1 by 3 receiver formation.

Cowan fired the ball from his own 7, hit Velarde in stride at full speed on the 50 and the senior loped in for the 85-yard touchdown that made it 16-0 after Taig Wiker's conversion run with 5:43 to go until intermission.

Both squads turned the ball over on their final possession of the first half.

Sequim's miscue came on a Velarde fumble after a 21-yard catch at the Kingston 18.

The Bucs fell victim to a Taig Wiker interception of Hale at the Kingston 24 as the half ended.

Hale completed 6 of 10 passes for 46 yards, but was intercepted three times.

Sequim blows game open with 22 3rd quarter points

The Wolves took the ball first to open the final 24 minutes and drove 65 yards in four plays.

From the Wolves 35, Gresli, who carried 6 times for a game-high 70 yards, got 12 hashes before Sequim opened the bag of tricks.

At the Sequim 47, Velarde took a jet sweep handoff from Cowan from left to right, pitching the ball to Taig Wiker, who was trailing the play laterally in the pistol backfield.

Wiker then fired the ball forward to Velarde, who rambled into Kingston territory before being pushed out of bounds at the Bucs 25 on a 28-yard gain.

A play later, Velarde got 6 more on a bubble screen from the left side, putting Sequim ahead 24-0 after scoring the conversion himself with 10:44 left in the third period.

Kingston punted back to the Wolves after another 3-and-out and Velarde got an excellent 41-yard return to the Buccaneers 23.

Gresli carried for 22 to the Bucs 8 and Riley Cowan got the TD on a left side scramble off the next snap.

Wiker threw to Cowan for the two-pointer and Sequim was up 32-zip at the 7:43 mark of the third.

A penalty marred series resulted in a Kingston punt that gave the hosts another short field at the Kingston 42.

Gresli carried for 25 yards to the Bucs 17, setting up Kingston's only score of the contest.

Cowan pivoted to his right from the shotgun snap and threw a bubble screen pass that hit Velarde in the hands and bounced to the ground.

Kingston's William Dixon scooped the ball up and returned it 77 yards for a score that chopped Sequim's lead to 32-6 at the 4:11 mark of the third quarter.

The Wolves didn't miss a beat though and moved 55 yards in six plays to the end zone on Velarde's 12-yard run on a jet sweep from left to right.

The two-point pass failed leaving the score at 38-6 with 2:46 to go in the third period.

On the first play of the 4th quarter, Hale threw back across the grain for a double-covered Dixon and Velarde leaped in front of the receiver, sprinting 76 yards to the house.

Byron Rice kicked the PAT to increase the Sequim margin to 45-6 with 11:41 remaining.

Wolves reserves took the field for the rest of the contest.  Freshman quarterback Taig Wiker was 3 for 5 for 48 yards.

Rice connected on a 34-yard field goal to complete the scoring with 6:05 to go, triggering the mercy rule.

Sequim had a huge advantage in total yards, outgaining Kingston 453-120, including 315-74 on the ground.

Kingston will visit Evergreen in Seattle next Friday at 6 p.m. for a non-league season finale.

Game Notes

Sequim honored "those who protect, serve and defend" at Friday's game.  The football team wore purple and gold camouflage jerseys with the names of the various branches of the Armed Forces on the back name panel.

The Sequim senior football players entered the stadium for the pregame ceremonies riding on a engine from Clallam County Fire District 3 as law enforcement from the Washington State Patrol, the Clallam County Sheriff's Office and the Sequim Police Department parked their vehicles on the north end of the track with strobe lights activated.

An HH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Group/Air Station Port Angeles conducted a flyover before the National Anthem and officers stood at attention along the sidelines with players from both schools.

All Armed Forces veterans in attendance were invited to the running track to be honored at halftime.

The Cowan-to-Velarde 85-yard scoring strike matches a Cody Manzer pass to Jesse Marunde from a 9-7 loss at Bremerton in 1997.

The longest TD pass in Sequim history is a 92-yard fade from Dustin Beus to Ricky Johnson in a 24-12 home win against Bainbridge in 1999.

It's the third time Velarde has caught 3 TD passes in a game in his career.  He also accomplished the feat against North Mason earlier this season and in 2016 against Port Angeles.

Velarde's 229-yard effort through the air Friday ranks third on Sequim's list of all-time most receiving yards in a game.   Velarde had 238 against Port Angeles in 2016.  Ryan Rutherford is the record holder with 246 yards on 5 catches against Port Townsend in 2004.

Velarde's Pick-Six interception return was his third of the season and the fifth of his career.

Sequim (6-3) is the number 3 team into district from the Olympic League and will visit Fife (8-1), the number 2 squad from the South Puget Sound League.

The Wolves won the last meeting between the teams 33-14 on a stormy night at Fife back in 2009, when both teams were members of the 2A Nisqually League.

Fife leads the all-time series against Sequim 9-4.

Sequim victories against Fife Trojans

1994

Coach Mark Textor's Wolves improved to 4-3 on the season with a 14-10 squeaker against Fife.

Sequim opened the game with a fumble, but held the Trojans to a 28-yard field goal after a good defensive
play by senior defensive end Roy Shick.

The Wolves fumbled again and Fife scored a TD on a six-yard run by Matt Query, giving the visitors a 10-0 lead with 2:35 to go in the first quarter.

Sequim came right back, scoring on a 70-yard slant pass from junior quarterback Craig Knapp to Roy Shick with 1:13 left in the opening period, leaving the Wolves down 10-7.

Shick had 3 catches for 145 yards.  Knapp completed 6 of 11 attempts for 202 yards.

Powell Jones was just wide on a 32-yard field goal for Sequim with 7 minutes left in the half.

The Wolves scored the go-ahead touchdown on another Knapp to Shick pass for 36 yards with 6:09 left in the third quarter.

Fife drove towards a potential game-winning score in the final period, but junior linebacker Scott Headrick burst through the line on a blitz as the Trojans quarterback was attempting a handoff.

The ball bounced free and Sequim recovered.

1999

After a scoreless first period, Sequim turned a Pierce County League opener into a 40-0 blowout over Fife.

Ricky Johnson scored three touchdowns, a 40-yard run, a 41-yard interception return and a 7-yard reception.

Sequim recovered three fumbles and Zach White scored the game's final touchdown on a 71-yard interception return.

Shane Neal carries 17 times for 139 yards.

The Wolves led 28-0 at halftime.

2008

(Sequim) -- Sequim came from behind in the second half to beat Fife 35-22 in a fog-shrouded contest at Sequim High School.

The Wolves (8-2) will face Centralia (8-2) in a State 2A playoff game Friday night at 7 on the gridiron at Tumwater Stadium.

A combination of fog and a muddy, slippery field left the game scoreless after the first 22 minutes.

Sequim cashed in first, wrapping up a 64-yard drive over almost 4 minutes on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Drew Rickerson to Bryan Little.

Clancy Catelli ran for the two-point conversion, giving the hosts an 8-0 lead with 2:35 left until intermission.

Fife quarterback Jeremy Nalder moved the Trojans 67 yards to the tying points, hitting mercurial wide receiver Dustin Yarrington with a 10-yard scoring pass with 1:04 left in second quarter.

Fife's Mike Mulvaney carried the ball on the end-around for the tying 2-pointer, tying the fray at 8.

The Trojans were bolstered on their opening possession of the second half with 35 yards from running back Alex Rohrer, who gave Fife a 15-8 lead on a 12-yard run with 9:16 left in the third period.

Sequim responded by driving 75 yards in less than a minute, culminated by Issac Yamamoto's 31-yard trap play run for a touchdown and Erik Huston's P-A-T for a 15-all tie.

Yamamoto replaced senior Brad Woolf at fullback in Friday's contest.

Woolf suffered a severe laceration to his upper left arm in a P.E. class Friday afternoon, after he crashed through a window in a Sequim gymnasium door.

Woolf is expected to have surgery Saturday at a Seattle hospital.

After forcing a Fife punt, Sequim pounded down the gridiron for the go-ahead points, grinding out 50 yards over 5 minutes and 50 seconds, finishing with a 10-yard pass from Rickerson to tight end Jeremy Oliver.

The P-A-T kick failed, leaving Sequim ahead 21-15 with 34 seconds left in the third quarter.

Disaster struck for Fife on the ensuing kickoff when Huston's squib kick was tipped by a Trojan and recovered by Sequim's Preston McFarlan at the Fife 25.

One play later, Rickerson rolled left to pass, then scrambled to the middle and sprinted to the right pylon 25 yards to paydirt.

Chris Pruden hit Bryan Little for the 2-point pass, giving Sequim a 29-15 lead with 15 ticks left in the third period.

The opportunitic Wolves intercepted Fife's Nalder three seconds into the fourth quarter when John Textor came up with a pick at the Sequim 47.

Textor finished the Wolves' ensuing drive with 7:55 to go when he caught a ball tipped by a Fife defensive back in the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown from Rickerson and a 35-15 Wolves advantage.

Fife's next two drives were stymied by an interception by Reed Omdal and a turnover on downs with 2:13 remaining in the contest.

The Trojans scored a final touchdown with one second remaining on a 1-yard pass from Nalder to Jordan McDaniel.

Overcoming a 15-yard un-sportsman-like conduct penalty after a McDaniel spike, Yarrington hit the 35-yard P-A-T for the final 35-22 margin.

Sequim's Rickerson completed 9 of 17 passes for 98 yards and 2 touchdowns, along with his rushing TD.

(Rickerson suffered a concussion during the game and was unavailable for Sequim's playoff contest against Centralia)

Fife's Nalder connected on 10 of 21 throws for 154 yards and 2 scores.

The Wolves' Travis Decker was the game's leading rusher with 110 yards on 25 carries.

2009

(Fife) -- Travis Decker scored 5 touchdowns, including a 60-yard run on the first play from scrimmage, as the Sequim Wolves dominated the Fife Trojans 33-14.

Decker finished with 189 yards on 24 carries, despite a swamp-like field and torrential rains at Fife High School.

The Wolves (9-1, 7-0) finish the regular season as Nisqually Olympic League football champions.

Sequim will play the Burlington-Edison Tigers at North Kitsap High School's Viking Stadium in the opening round of the State 2A playoffs next Saturday night at 7.

Decker scored his second TD with 2:38 to go in the opening quarter on a 4-yard run, putting the visitors up 14-0.

Drew Rickerson's quarterback scramble of 21 yards to the Trojans 6-yard line was the key in a 10 play, 47 yard march.

Sequim's John Textor stopped the Trojans with an interception of Fife quarterback Devan Bennion at the Wolves 45.

Sequim's drive to a third score included a 27-yard Rickerson pass to Textor and a 17-yarder to Clancy Catelli.

Decker struck paydirt from the 12 on the first play of the second quarter, outrunning the Fife cornerback to the pylon on a sweep from the T-formation. Sequim 21, Fife 0.

Bennion was intercepted again, this time by Alex Gillis, giving Sequim possession at the Fife 47.

Decker scored on the seventh play from 3 yards as Sequim led 27-0 at halftime.

Opening the second half, Rickerson fumbled to Fife's Forrest Hazen at the Sequim 10.

Alex Rohrer scored from the 3 on the third play, cutting the lead to 27-7.

The Sequim regulars finished their work for the night on Decker's 9-yard dash with 8:18 left, up 33-7.

Bennion scored the last Fife TD on a 1-yard run with 1:02 remaining.

Sequim's Rickerson completed 15 of 30 passes for 156 yards.

Fife's Bennion connected on just 1 of 17 passing for 5 yards with 3 interceptions.

The Wolves defense held Fife to zero net yards and no first downs in the opening half, as Sequim had a 383 to 75 advantage in total yards.
