(Sequim) - An improved Sequim running attack and a strong defensive effort that forced four Olympic turnovers, including a pair in the final quarter, made for a happy Homecoming celebration for the Wolves Friday night.
In a hard-hitting, see-saw battle that featured six lead changes, the hosts seized the advantage for good with 14 minutes remaining and pulled away for a 31-18 victory over the visitors from Kitsap County.
Sequim improved to 4-3 overall and is tied with Port Angeles for third place at 2-2 in the Olympic League 2A standings.
The Wolves and Roughriders meet Friday night at Civic Field with the winner getting the inside track for the league's final playoff spot.
Port Angeles was drubbed 42-13 by Bremerton at home last night.
Baseball scores early
The Wolves hit the board first after a Riley Cowan punt pinned the Trojans deep and a pair of penalties backed Olympic to its own 3.
On a second down play, a fumble on attempted fly sweep handoff was recovered by the Trojans in the end zone. The 2-point safety made it 2-0 Sequim with 6:55 left in the opening quarter.
Sequim got the free kick at the 50 and drove to the Olympic 5 in eight plays, where on 4th-and-3, Byron Rice converted a 22-yard field goal to put the Wolves ahead 5-0 at the 2:07 mark of the first frame.
Olympic took its first lead on a 6-play, 84-yard ground-pounding series, capped by a 47-yard touchdown around left end by sophomore running back Malcolm Dewalt. The score was Olympic 6, Sequim 5 after the conversion failed with 6:23 remaining in the half.
Dewalt had 56 yards on 6 carries and caught 4 passes for 27 hashes.
Towel play connects for big yardage
Sequim bounced back with a quick 4-play, 90-yard drive, boosted by a spectacular jump pass by Gavin Velarde, that traveled 45 yards in the air, to freshman Michael Young, who was run down by a defender at the Trojans 4, completing a 79-yard gain.
The Wolves scored two snaps later on a Riley Cowan 4-yard pass to freshman Taig Wiker. The conversion run failed, leaving Sequim ahead 11-6, with 4:47 to go before intermission.
Cowan completed 10 of 19 passes for 112 yards and a score, with one interception.
Olympic converted the only Sequim turnover of the game, a Riley Cowan interception by Dylan Wohlford down to the Sequim 6, into six points on a 1-yard plunge by Mason Quitevis with 59 seconds left in the half, making it 12-11 Trojans.
Balanced attack puts Wolves ahead
Sequim mixed the run and pass superbly on the initial second half drive, with 5 rushes and four passes, moving 78 yards to a touchdown in 2:52 on Cowan's 4-yard run with 9:02 left in the third, making it 17-12 Wolves.
It was Olympic's turn to score again and the Trojans stayed on the ground on 7 out of 8 plays, the exception, a 31-yard pass from QB Gillick to Adam Johnson that put the visitors into Sequim territory at the 28.
Mason Quitevis gave Olympic its final lead with 5:33 left in the third quarter on a 14-yard TD run and the Trojans were up 18-17.
The teams exchanged possession before the Wolves moved for the final go-ahead score late in the third period, after a 26-yard punt return by Gavin Velarde put Sequim down to the Olympic 31.
Five plays later, Velarde was in the end zone on a 3-yard run and Sequim was ahead to stay 24-18 with 13:06 remaining.
Velarde had 50 yards on 11 carries with 2 TDs and caught 2 passes for 34 markers.
The Trojans faced a 3rd-and-21 at their 38 with 9:10 left and went to a bag of tricks that went awry on Friday, the 13th.
An attempted hook-and-lateral after a Gillick pass to Johnson for 7 yards, ended up on the turf and was recovered by Sequim.
The Wolves were poised for a time-consuming 8-play march that burned 4 minutes and 23 seconds, overcoming three penalties for 35 yards.
Velarde got the game-clinching TD with 4:43 left on a 16-yard run to the left pylon and Sequim was home free at 31-18.
The Trojans last gasp ended with a turnover on downs at the Sequim 47 with 2:38 left and the Wolves ran out the clock.
Sequim rushed 34 times for 144 yards and three scores, while Olympic ran 34 times for 183 hashes and three TDs.
Sequim outgained Olympic in total yards 335-281.

Memorable games in the Sequim - PA rivalry at Civic Field
1936 - Sequim 13, Port Angeles 6
Coach R.W. Brockmueller's Wolves improved to 2-0 with a 13-6 win on soggy Roosevelt Field, Sequim's first victory at Port Angeles.
The Teddies, as the Angeles teams were known prior to the 1940s, led 6-0 after halftime after a 30-yard TD pass from Dick Johnson to Gene Lee.
In the second half, the Sequim backfield, including speedster "Tuffy" Nelson, along with Doug Smith and Billy Ward, ripped off big chunks of yardage through substantial holes driven by the Wolves line and wound up the game with two touchdowns and a conversion.
On their first drive, Sequim marched straight down the field to score. A 20-yard pass from Nelson to Ward put the ball at the Angeles 30.
Moments later, Nelson started around his own left tackle, avoided a couple of "wild necktie tackle attempts" and raced 25 yards to the score. Doug Smith kicked the extra point to give Sequim the lead 7-6.
Nelson made the second Sequim touchdown, plunging across from the one-yard-line after a steady Sequim push down the field.
1938 - Sequim 41, Port Angeles 0
Coach Jim Scott's Wolves ran up six touchdowns and five conversion kicks on the way to a 41-0 rout at Roosevelt Field.
The Wolves' two big backfield aces, fullback Doug Smith and halfback Bill Ward, both over 200 pounds, both fast and rugged, smashed, plunged and sprinted all game long. Their smaller, but fleet running mate, Warren Baker, kept pace with a thrilling exhibition of long punt returns.
The touchdown-making was evenly divided between the two halves with Sequim crossing the goal line three times in each half.
Smith recorded three scores, Ward two and quarterback John Campbell catching a 10-yard TD pass from Smith.
Smith made the five PATs with Baker holding the ball.
Sequim finished the 1938 season with a 6-1-1 record and a Peninsula League championship, after sharing the crown the previous season with Port Angeles.
1941 - Port Angeles 28, Sequim 6
The Roughriders walloped the Wolves 28-6 in the first-ever night game played under the lights on the north Olympic Peninsula at the original Civic Field, featuring wooden grandstands, packed with 28-hundred fans.
Port Angeles scored once in the second quarter and three times in the fourth before Coach Jim Scott's Wolves got on the board with a short pass from Rob Dryke to "Moe" Cassalery.
Rob Dryke's twin brother, Rich, went down with a wrenched ankle in the game.
1949 - Sequim 31, Port Angeles 0
The Sequim Wolves, led by fullback Bruce Randall, battered away at the Roosevelt High Roughriders for three periods and a 31-0 victory in an Olympic League conference game played at Civic Field.
It was all Randall as the Wolves cut loose in the opening minutes of the second quarter after a scoreless see-saw opening period in which both teams appeared evenly matched.
The big fullback carried the ball on line plunges for three first downs and then broke loose on the Roughrider's 12-yard line for the first score of the game.
Moments later, Randall recovered a fumble on the Roughrider 22 and three plays later, halfback Ted Peabody sprinted eight yards for a touchdown on a fake buck into the line. Both conversions failed.
A recovered fumble on the Roughrider's 40-yard line set up the third score. Randall passed to Schott, who lateralled to Peabody for a first down on the 28. Randall again passed to Schott, who made a brilliant one-handed catch on the 16 for another first down. Then Randall broke loose off tackle for the third touchdown. Jim McNally converted to make the score 19-0.
In the final moments of the third period, Fahler Dunlap picked off a Roughrider pass and raced 32 yards before being knocked out of bounds on the eight yard line. On the next play, Randall again struck for a score.
The final touchdown came midway in the final period after a 40-yard drive with Randall going over from the eight yard line.
Jerry Scoles of Sequim turned in an outstanding defensive performance. The longest run of the game was posted by a reserve Sequim scatback, Dave McDonald, who cut around left end for a 40-yard sprint in the final quarter.
1951 - Sequim 19, Port Angeles 0
Led by a line-bruising fullback, Ron Schott, and Pete Messenger, a racehorse halfback, the Sequim Wolves defeated the Roosevelt Roughriders, 19-0, in an Olympic League game played at Civic Field.
Approximately 2-thousand fans watched the Wolves smash through the line for touchdowns in the third and fourth periods and strike through the air for another in the second.
The two elevens fought through a scoreless first period. Sequim pounded down to the 15 and to the 4 in two drives that were stopped by Port Angeles fumble recoveries.
Opening the second quarter, Sequim recovered a Roughrider fumble on the 20, but McDonald intercepted a Sequim aerial on the 11.
But again, Sequim recovered another fumble on the Angeles 28 and drove for the opening score. Schott and Dalton plunged to the 13 and Kilby, fading back, passed to Messenger in the end zone. The conversion failed.
A third down bullet pass down the middle from Sam Kilby to Dale Klint set up the second score. With the ball on the Angeles 35, Schott ran for the first down on the 22 and Messenger skirted right end to the 2-yard line. Schott then bulled over for a touchdown. Dalton converted on a pitchout around left end.
In the fourth period, Sequim recovered another fumble on the Roosevelt 20. Schott made a first down on the 9 and Dalton broke through on the next play to complete the scoring.
Messenger turned in an excellent kicking effort when he punted out of bounds on the PA one-foot line.
1952 - Sequim 20, Port Angeles 7
Coming from behind with two touchdowns in the final quarter, the Sequim Wolves defeated the Roosevelt high Roughriders, 20-7, in the annual Homecoming game played on a wet, soggy Civic Field.
Halfback Pete Taylor and the right arm of 150-pound Ray Cassalery were the biggest factors in Sequim's defeat of a Roughrider team, riddled by injuries and suspensions, that fought the Wolves in 48 minutes of good football.
The teams played on even terms in the first half, but the Wolves struck for one "bolt from the blue touchdown". On a third down play with four minutes gone in the ball game, Pete Taylor swung out around left end, hit the sidelines and rambled 50 yards for a 6-0 Sequim lead. The conversion failed when end Barry Stratford broke through the line and blocked an attempted kick from placement.
With less than 2 minutes of the second period gone, the Roughriders produced their touchdown with lightnihg speed. Bob Staeger kicked out of the bounds and Port Angeles took over on their own 40. On the next play, Middleton raced for 26 yards, Gossard lugged for six and Ralph Hilt broke into the clear for 34 yards and a touchdown. Pete Bailey crossed up the defense and whipped a pass to Nick Basom from a fake kick formation for the extra point.
In the final quarter, Sequim took over on its own 15, uncorking an 85-yard scoring drive. Ray Cassalery tossed two passes to Pete Taylor and finally Rich Correia bucked over from the 1 for a 12-7 Sequim lead. Cassalery converted on a pitchout play.
With four minutes left, Gordon Welk intercepted a flat pass and set sail from the Roughrider 48 and raced for a touchdown. Fullback Correia bucked for the conversion.
The Roughriders still had two good scoring chances left but both were stalled by a determined Sequim defense. Eddie Adamich uncorked a 40-yard pass play to Ralph Hilt that carried to the Sequim 20. Another aerial play took the ball to the 11, but Sequim took over on downs.
With one minutes left, Adamich again heaved to end Nick Basom on the Sequim 10, but two pass plays that fell incomplete ran out the clock.
It was the final game for Sequim seniors Chuck Lehman, Ray Cassalery, Bob Dalton, George McComb, Pete Taylor, Bob Kelley and Bruce Jones.
1978 - Sequim 23, Port Angeles 8
In their first meeting since 1963, Sequim defeated Port Angeles 23-8, spoiling the inaugural event at a revamped Civic Field that debuted a new grandstand and playing surface.
A crowd of nearly 4-thousand watched as Coach Barry Wheeler's 3-0 Wolves opened the game with a 68-yard drive to a touchdown.
Quarterback Mike Russell finished the 16-play series, running around left end from the PA 4. Blaise Kaminski's extra point made it 7-0.
In the opening drive, junior fullback Mike Sherry carried 6 times for 19 yards and tailback Tony Shea got 18 hashes, led by the blocking of J.D. Angiuli, Matt Young, Curt Burkhardt, Jay Neuharth, Don McBride, Kaminski, John Irwin and Rusty Priest.
Sequim got on the board again with an 28-yard field goal from Kaminski with 16 seconds left in the opening quarter to put the Wolves ahead 10-0.
Sequim increased the margin to 17-0 with 9:40 left in the first half on 5-yard Sherry touchdown, capping a 3-play, 75-yard drive that started with Shea's 66-yard tackle-breaking beauty around right end at the PA 9.
Sequim recovered a Rider fumble at its own 48 and took another 10-play, 52-yard journey to the PA end zone, with Sherry pounding in from the 1 with 3:28 to go before intermission. PA's Dave Fairchild blocked Kaminski's PAT attempt, leaving the score at 23-0.
PA was held to just 11 plays and 22 yards in the first half, while Sequim's Shea got 113 of his 152 yards before intermission.
The Wolves had 215 total yards in the first 24 minutes.
Dave Williams scored the lone PA touchdown from the 3 in the third quarter.
The Wolves celebrated with a victory lap around Civic Field as the huge contingent of Sequim fans, packed in the south end of the grandstand and on the field behind and around the team bench, roared their approval.
1979 - Sequim 7, Port Angeles 6
Coach Barry Wheeler's Wolves won in PA for the second straight year before a crowd of 28-hundred at rainy Civic Field. All the scoring came in the second quarter.
Port Angeles hit the board first after an 85-yard drive was capped by a Scott Gant 2-yard TD run. The 2-point run attempt failed.
Sequim scored with 18 seconds remaining until halftime on a 17-yard pass from Scott Bower to Scott Browning. Tight end John Irwin connected on the soccer-style extra point kick to put Sequim ahead 7-6.
On the wet, miserable night, Port Angeles lost three of its five fumbles, but Sequim managed to hang on to all but one of its four mishandles.
1984 - Sequim 6, Port Angeles 0
Sequim won a hard-hitting defensive struggle against Port Angeles in front of 28-hundred fans at rainy Civic Field.
The Wolves scored with 10 seconds left in the game, the only touchdown in the contest, for the 6-0 victory.
Port Angeles drove into Sequim territory early in the game, but the Wolves defense, led by sophomores Mike McFarland, Shawn Kendall and Mark Verstegen, smothered the Riders and took over on downs at the Sequim 17.
Sequim's drive to the winning points began with 4:55 remaining on their own 49.
Fullback John Nolan picked up yardage on the ground and quarterback Tony Angiuli hit receiver Willie Smith for a first down at the PA 40.
The Wolves converted a fourth down when Angiuli hit Smith on a short pass and the senior fought his way for 28 yards to the Port Angeles 12.
The Sequim line of Scott McCord, Adam Jenkins, Ken Warren, Elmer Grasser, Tim Roberts and Bobby Stipe/Reandeau led the way in the final march to the end zone.
An Angiuli pass to Brian Luther put the ball at the Riders 4. An offside penalty on third down moved the ball to the 2.
On third-and-inches, Nolan got a first down at the one. It took two tries, but Angiuli got in under the pile to score with 10 seconds left.
After the PAT was blocked, Sequim kicked off to PA, but the ball was fumbled at the Riders 45 after a good return by Craig Heckman and the Wolves recovered.
The final gun touched off a Sequim celebration as Wolves fans called their team back from the locker room. They paraded around the north end of Civic Field, carrying first-year head coach Rich Sweeney on their shoulders before boarding the bus
for home.
2004 - Sequim 37, Port Angeles 6
Brian Savage rushed for 230 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Wolves to a 37-6 thrashing of the Riders in the rival's first meeting in 14 years.
Port Angeles quarterback Justin Boudreau scored the only Rider TD on a 7-yard keeper in the second period.
The Wolves got a 48-yard juggling catch by Ryan Rutherford to the PA 16 with five minutes left in the half.
Hall was intercepted in the end zone by Casey Crumb to end the threat.
Sequim led 14-6 at halftime on touchdowns by Savage and Nathan Chavez.
The Wolves blew the game open in the third period on a 34-yard Savage TD run, a 14-yard scoring run by quarterback Kenny Hall and a safety when Connor Clark sacked Boudreau in the end zone.
Tim Sutton got the final Sequim touchdown in the final period.
Sequim ran 44 times for 366 yards. Michael Ruiz had eight carries for 70 yards.
2005 - Sequim 19, Port Angeles 6
It was another hard-hitting rivalry contest as Sequim beat Port Angeles 19-6 at Civic Field.
The game went to the final quarter tied at 6. Sequim marched down the gridiron, alternating carries from running backs Eric Zangara and Adrien Gault. The 11-play, 76-yard drive, finished with a 14-yard touchdown run by Zangara, put the Wolves ahead 12-6.
On the following series, Sequim cornerback Sean Dinius intercepted PA backup quarterback Eric Lane and returned it 36 yards for a touchdown that clinched the game.
Sequim scored first with a 37-yard scoring strike from Wyatt Short to Garrett Lotzgesell on a play action rollout play.
2008 - Sequim 38, Port Angeles 7
Sophomore running back Isaac Yamamoto scored two touchdowns to fuel a dominant Sequim running game and an aggressive defense led the Wolves to a 38-7 victory over the Roughriders at Civic Field.
After a Clancy Catelli interception, sophomore quarterback Drew Rickerson found John Textor alone down the right sideline for a 32-yard scoring strike, putting the Wolves up 14-0 with almost six minutes left in the opening quarter.
The Roughriders scored their lone TD on a 1-yard run by Troy Martin with 3:10 to go in the first frame.
Yamamoto boosted the margin to 24-7 after his 18-yard scoring jaunt with 9:39 remaining in the first half.
The Wolves got runs from Travis Decker and Joey Gish in the second half to complete the scoring.
2010 - Sequim 41, Port Angeles 0
Sequim's Drew Rickerson threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more scores as the Wolves pasted the previously undefeated Port Angeles Roughriders 41-0 Friday night, winning the Olympic League championship.
Both teams move into the 2A district playoffs next Saturday at North Kitsap Stadium in Poulsbo.
A standing-room-only crowd -- estimated at 42-hundred -- jammed the Civic Field grandstand and portable bleachers installed on the east-side of the field.
The tenth-ranked Wolves (8-1 overall, 6-0 league) got on the board in 2 plays after holding the 7th-ranked Roughriders (8-1 overall, 5-1 league) to three plays and out on the game's first possession.
Starting at their own 28, Rickerson hit Tyler Forshaw on a 45-yard bubble screen to the PA 27 and a horse-collar tackle penalty moved the ball to the Rider 12.
Rickerson found Frank Catelli open over the middle for a leaping 12-yard TD strike with 10:11 left in the opening quarter for a 7-0 Wolves lead.
Both teams bogged down on their next two possessions before the Wolves clicked on another 5-play scoring march, keyed by Catelli's 27-yard quarterback ramble to the PA 17 on 3rd-and-short.
Two plays later, Rickerson followed his blocking superbly on a slicing 17-yard touchdown run for a 14-0 Sequim advantage with 8:03 left in the first half.
Port Angeles quarterback Keenan Walker was intercepted by Sequim's Joey Hall at the Wolves 47.
A 27-yard Rickerson pass to Isaac Yamamoto gave Sequim a first-and-goal at the PA 8, where Rickerson scored again on the second play for a 20-0 lead with 4:48 to go in the second quarter.
The Wolves broke it open with another 2-play blitz starting at their own 26, a 34-yard pass from Rickerson to Yamamoto, followed by a full-speed, arms-extended grab of a Rickerson bomb by Joey Hall for a 40-yard score and a 27-0 Sequim halftime lead.
Sequim opened the second half with a 63-yard scoring drive, highlighted by a 33-yard Rickerson pass to Joey Hall to the PA 24.
Isaac Yamamoto capped it with a 1-yard plunge, increased the lead to 34-0 with just a minute and a half gone in the second half.
The final Sequim TD was a 19-yard Michael Ballard scoring reception from Rickerson with 1:02 to go in
the third quarter.
2012 - Sequim 34, Port Angeles 7
Sequim High's Jack Wiker and Lopaka Yasumura combined for 261 rushing yards Friday night as the Wolves beat the Port Angeles Roughriders 34-7.
Rain and wind swept Civic Field for most of the game, Sequim's fifth consecutive win in the Clallam County rivalry.
The teams exchanged 4 punts in a scoreless first period before Sequim took advantage of a Christian Miles punt return into Port Angeles territory to break the stalemate.
Quarterback Jack Wiker capped a ground pounding 5-play, 42-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown jaunt.
A blocked extra point left the Wolves ahead 6-0 with 9:52 remaining in the second quarter.
Wiker carried the ball 19 times for 107 yards.
Port Angeles (0-8 overall, 0-6 in Olympic League play) entered Sequim territory twice before halftime, but failed to convert two fourth-down attempts; one from the Wolves 45, another from the 35-yard-line.
The pivotal play of the first half was Sequim's Christian Miles intercepting Port Angeles quarterback Larsson Chapman and returning the ball to the Roughrider 20-yard-line just 36 seconds before intermission.
Miles suffered an apparent rib injury on the play and did not return to the game.
Three plays later, Wiker lofted a fade pass down the right sideline to receiver Brett Wright for a 25-yard touchdown with 29 seconds left.
Wiker's two-point conversion run gave the guests a 14-0 advantage at halftime.
Wiker completed 9-of-14 passes for 86 yards.
The Wolves moved into Roughrider country to start the second half, but Wiker coughed up the ball on a fumble recovered by PA at Rider 48 with 8 minutes left in the third quarter.
Aided by a Sequim personal foul penalty, the Roughriders had a first-down at the Sequim 25.
A holding penalty stymied PA, but Chapman hit Jonathan Newlin for 9 yards setting up a 4th-and-6 from the Sequim 20.
Nathan Angevine broke open a counter play from his right slotback position and scampered 20 yards through Civic Field's muddy baseball diamond to score with 5:56 left in the third quarter.
Angevine had 20 yards on 8 carries.
Vincent Ioffrida's PAT kick closed the gap to 14-7.
An energized Riders' sideline and crowd sensed a momentum shift, but Sequim was up to the challenge.
Wolves' senior receiver Austin Law caught a Wiker pass on 3rd-and-5 from the Wolves 32 for a big first down.
Wiker tested the PA line twice for 8 yards, leaving Sequim in a 3rd-and-2 at its 46.
Lopaka Yasumura popped through a seam up the middle, turned on the burners and showed his heels to the PA defenders on a 54-yard TD sprint.
Wiker's 2-point conversion run pushed the Wolves out to a 22-7 lead with 3:20 left in the third.
PA never threatened again and Sequim scored on its next two possessions - both marches ending with Yasumura TD runs in the fourth quarter.
Yasumura racked up 154 yards on 18 carries.
PA's Chapman completed 4-of-10 passes for 32 yards.
Brian Cristion was the leading Roughrider rusher with 43 yards on 4 carries.
Sequim outgained Port Angeles 352 to 93.
