PREP FOOTBALL: North Mason 69, Sequim 46
(Sequim) -- 16 touchdowns and a field goal -- 115 points -- were tallied on the Sequim High School scoreboard Friday night as the North Mason Bulldogs defeated the Wolves 69-46.
The Bulldogs clinched the Olympic League's third playoff seed after Olympic High lost to North Kitsap 31-14 Friday.
North Mason (7-2 overall, 5-2 in Olympic League play) will travel to White River for a district playoff opener next week.
Sequim (0-9 overall and 0-7 in Olympic League play) has one more chance for a victory Thursday night in a non-league game at Foster High School in Tukwila.
A wild, high scoring frenzy began with 3 touchdowns in the first 84 seconds of the game.
After the scoreboard shorted out forcing a replay of the opening kickoff, North Mason's Andy Renne ran 51 yards to pay dirt on the contest's second scrimmage play, making it 7-0 Bulldogs.
Sequim's Brett Wright returned the ensuing kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown, that was immediately answered by the Bulldog's Tommy Marsh with an 85-yard kickoff return that put North Mason ahead 14-7.
The Bulldogs recovered an onside kick at the Sequim 33 and boosted the lead to 21-7 on Marsh's 2-yard run with 8:55 left in the opening quarter.
Sequim got a 25-yard field goal from Adrian Espinoza as the Wolves trailed 21-10 after one period.
North Mason got 3 consecutive scores in the second quarter and led 42-10 at intermission.
The Bulldogs surged ahead 49-10 after quarterback Matt Becker ran 86 yards for a TD with 8:15 left in the third period.
Another North Mason touchdown would have triggered the mercy rule, but Sequim had no surrender in mind.
The Wolves punched the ball into the end zone on consecutive possessions, 1-yard runs from Chris Whitaker and Adam Knapman, cutting the deficit to 49-25 going to the final stanza.
The teams combined for 6 more touchdowns in the final 12 minutes.
Matt Becker connected with Daniel Burggraaf for the second time in the game for a touchdown pass and North Mason powered ahead 56-25.
The teams traded touchdowns the rest of the way with Sequim's Knapman finding the end zone twice and Moroles connecting with Wright on a scoring pass.
Renne and DeAndre Dixon had 4th quarter TD runs for North Mason, rolling up more than 500 yards rushing on the night with their wishbone attack.
In other Olympic League action Friday night, Kingston beat Port Angeles 49-14, North Kitsap clinched the league title, beating Olympic 31-14 and Klahowya shut out Bremerton 35-0.
