2016 Football Game 7 - Sequim 48, Olympic 26

Sequim football beats Olympic 48-26

October 18th, 2016 - 01:00 am

Sequim junior Gavin Velarde visited the Olympic end zone 5 times Monday and now has 31 career touchdowns for the Wolves

(Silverdale) -- Gavin Velarde scored 5 touchdowns and Riley Cowan threw two scoring passes as the Sequim Wolves took control of second place in the Olympic League 2A standings with a 48-26 victory over the Olympic Trojans Monday night at Silverdale Stadium.

Sequim senior receiver Curtis Gorr and sophomore quarterback Riley Cowan leave the Silverdale Stadium field Monday after the Wolves spoiled the Olympic homecoming celebration 48-26.

Sequim (5-2 overall, 3-1 in Olympic League 2A play) will host Port Angeles Friday.

Olympic (4-3 overall, 3-2 in Olympic League 2A play) trailed Sequim 26-14 late in the first half, but the Trojans drove to the Wolves 15 with 8 seconds remaining, looking to seize momentum before the half and receive the second half kickoff.

Olympic quarterback Evan Quitevis threw into the right flat, looking for Devin Burleigh on a hitch pattern that was jumped by Velarde at his own 3.

Velarde, with a full head of steam from his safety position, streaked up the visitor's sideline 97 yards untouched, giving Sequim a 34-14 halftime advantage.

Olympic received the second half kickoff and methodically drove 80 yards in 11 plays.

Evan Quitevis found Kolby Johnson for a 6-yard TD pass and Olympic chopped the lead to 34-20 with 6:30 left in the third period.

Any Trojan momentum was deflated on the ensuing kickoff as Velarde received at his own 20, finding a seam up the right hash, streaking 80 yards to the touchdown and Sequim was back up 41-20.

After holding the Trojans to 3-and-out, the Wolves chewed up 69 yards in 8 plays, Velarde going the final four hashes to make it 48-20 with 11:52 to go.

Evan Quitevis got the last Olympic touchdown with 5:55 left on a 20-yard run around right end and a nifty cutback into the end zone.

Velarde blocked the extra point, keeping the final margin at 48-26.

Two early Sequim TD strikes

Cowan's TD passes came early, a 13-yarder in the back of the end zone to Payton Glasser and a 50-yard rocket to Kyler Rollness, pushing the Wolves ahead 13-0 after one period.

An Olympic punt deflected off the back of a Trojan lineman, giving Sequim possession at the Oly 6.

Velarde got the first of his 3 rushing scores on the next play and the Wolves were ahead 20-0 with 10:02 left in the first half.

The Trojans answered with an 8-play, 55-yard march that took 4:01, Malcolm Dewalt scoring on a counter down the left sidelines, that closed the margin to 20-7 with 5:40 left until halftime.

The Wolves passing attack clicked on the next drive with a 24-yard leaping catch by Glasser to the Olympic 36 and a 35-yard snag by Rollness to the Trojans 1.

Velarde hit pay dirt after next snap, putting the Wolves up 26-7 with 3:09 left in the second quarter.

Olympic climbed back into the contest with a 36-yard TD catch and run by Darelle White that narrowed the score to 26-14 with 1:44 to go until intermission.

2016 Football Game 6 - Sequim 47, North Mason 12

Sequim tramples North Mason 47-12

October 7th, 2016 - 11:30 pm

(Sequim) -- Sequim converted three consecutive North Mason turnovers into touchdowns in the final seven minutes of the first half, as the Wolves took a 47-12 Homecoming victory over the Boys from Belfair.

A pair of Tyler Conn scoring runs (42 and 35 yards) put the hosts ahead 13-0 after the first quarter.

The Bulldogs closed to 13-6 with 8:32 left in the half on a well-executed trap play from 13 yards by Devon Blondell.

The Wolves countered by driving 69 yards in 5 plays, highlighted by a 33-yard pass from Riley Cowan to Kyler Rollness down to the North Mason 20.

Gavin Velarde tallied the first of his 3 touchdowns on the next play, a scoring strike from Riley Cowan, putting the hosts ahead 19-6 with 7:15 left in the second quarter.

Cascade of Bulldog miscues

The parade of North Mason errors started with a Devon Blondell fumble that was recovered by Sequim's Michael Larsen at North Mason 43.

Seven plays later, Cowan took the pigskin the final hash to pay dirt and Sequim was ahead 27-6 at the 4:25 mark of the second stanza.

The Bulldogs drove into Sequim territory, but were stymied by an interception of North Mason quarterback Anthony Schooler by the Wolves' Kyler Rollness at the Sequim 44.

Cowan found Velarde on a 13-yard scoring pass with 1:07 to go for a 34-6 Sequim bulge.

Cowan completed 5 of his 12 passes for 90 yards and two TDs.

Two plays into their next drive, NM's Schooler fumbled the ball away to the Wolves' Beau Bernsten at the Bulldogs 45.

Velarde took a long pass-run combination 41 yards to the Bulldogs 4, setting up Payton Glasser's 4-yard touchdown catch from Cowan in the right corner of the end zone with 35 seconds left.

Sequim (4-2 overall, 2-1 in Olympic League play) went to the halftime locker room ahead 41-6.

Running clock early in second half

After Sequim recovered a North Mason onside kick attempt at the Bulldogs 47 to start the second half, Velarde streaked out of the backfield and down the left sideline for 47 yards and a 47-6 Wolves lead with 11:52 to go in the third quarter.

The final Sequim touchdown triggered the mercy rule and the clock ran the final 23 minutes and 52 seconds.

Velarde had 6 rushes for 109 yards and 2 touchdowns, plus 3 catches for 53 yards and a score.

North Mason (1-5 overall and 1-3 in Olympic League play) got on the board once more in the final quarter when Austin Knight caught a 15 yard TD pass from Anthony Schooler.

Schooler completed 10 of 24 passes for 77 yards with 2 interceptions.

Next Week:

Sequim will travel to Silverdale Stadium to meet the Olympic Trojans next Friday with kickoff slated for 7:15 p.m.

North Mason will host the Forks Spartans for a non-leaguer at Phil Pugh Stadium.

Game Notes:

Sequim High honored its Homecoming Royalty at halftime, including Queen Sydney Balkan and King Grant Pierson, Princess Sadie Woods and Prince Sean Jones, Duke Andrew Juntilla and Duchess Dana Nguyen.

(Sequim) -- The North Kitsap Vikings stayed unbeaten Friday night, rolling up almost 500 total yards on the way to a 42-7 Olympic League 2A division win over the Sequim Wolves.

The Vikings (5-0 overall and 3-0 in Olympic League play) got on the board first with a 63-yard pass from Tristin Newman to Carson Bower, putting North Kitsap ahead 6-0 with 6:33 left in the first quarter.

After forcing Sequim to punt on its first two possessions, the Vikings' Dax Solis ripped off an 85-yard romp on a counter play to the Wolves 6.

Sequim (3-2 overall and 1-1 in Olympic League play) turned the ball over on downs at the Vikings 37 early in the second period and North Kitsap responded with a 63 yard march in 6 plays.

The NK drive was capped off by a 32-yard TD run by Sam Henden that pushed the visitors ahead 21-0 with 7:12 before intermission.

A 43-yard bomb from Riley Cowan to Curtis Gorr put Sequim at the Vikings 13 to set up the Wolves only score of the contest.

Gavin Velarde pulled in an 11-yard scoring strike from Cowan in the left corner of the end zone with 5:29 remaining in the 2nd period, closing the gap to 21-7.

North quelled any thoughts of a Sequim comeback, grinding out 14 plays and scoring with 20 seconds left on a Nate Kjormoe 14-yard run that made it 28-7 Vikings at halftime.

The Vikings held Sequim scoreless in the second half and put 2 more touchdowns on the board, a 48-yard Henden run with 10:39 left in the third quarter and a 6-yard Joel Ingram dash with 7:11 to go.
