(Sumner) -- Cascade Christian avenged its only loss of 2008 regular season with a 21-7 victory over Sequim at Sunset Chevrolet Stadium Saturday night.
It was a rematch of last year's 17-14 thriller won by the Wolves in Sequim.
After being held to 10 yards on its first two possessions by Sequim, Cascade Christian -- last year's runnerup in Class 1A -- started a long march at their own 8 yard line with 4:33 left in the opening period.
The key play of the drive was a 28-yard pass from Kyle Stennes to Axle Johnson that put the Cougars at the Sequim 19.
Two plays later, Stennes hit Spencer Ramos for a 21-yard touchdown pass, giving the hosts a 7-0 lead after Jonathan Felczak's kick.
The Wolves looked for the equalizing score on their next 2 possessions, but failed to convert, turning the ball over on downs, first at the Cougars 41 and later at the CC 9 after Drew Rickerson's 4th down pass was caught by John Textor, but out of bounds beyond the end line.
Sequim tied it up with 3:33 left in the half on Rickerson's 20-yard strike to Joel Anastasi, capping a 46 yard, 5 play drive with Frank Catelli's PAT.
A leg injury to starting center Preston McFarlen caused problems for the Wolves.
A mishandled shotgun snap by Rickerson just 27 seconds before halftime caused a critical Sequim turnover.
Cascade Christian capitalized with a 13-yard fade pass at the left corner of the end zone from Stennes to Jake Archer with 13 seconds left.
The Cougars went to the halftime locker room with a 14-7 advantage.
Sequim moved deep into Cascade Christian territory in the opening possession of the second half on a 65-yard pass from Rickerson to Textor, down to the Cougars 20.
On the seventh play of the drive, the Wolves faced 4th and 8 at the CC 13.
Rickerson rolled to the left, shoveling the ball forward to Joey Hall for an apparent tying touchdown.
However, the officials ruled that Rickerson was past the line of scrimmage, resulting in a 5-yard penalty and loss of down, turning the ball over to the Cougars.
Cascade Christian moved the ball out to the Sequim 45 before stalling and Travis Walrath's punt pinned the Wolves back to their own 1.
After 7 plays, Sequim was forced to punt from their own 21 and Rickerson's boot was returned to the Wolves 32 by CC's Spencer Ramos.
The Cougars extended the lead to 21-7 with 1:48 to go in the third quarter on an 11-yard TD pass from Stennis to Axle Johnson.
The key play of the drive was a 20-yard Stennis pass to Axle Johnson on 4th and 4 from the Wolves 26.
Sequim's best opportunity to score the rest of the way was set up by a 40-yard Rickerson to Textor strike to the Cougars 35 with 7 minutes left.
The next play, Rickerson was sacked for a 13-yard loss, then tried another long pass to Textor down the left sideline that was intercepted at the Cascade Christian 1 by Spencer Ramos.
Rickerson finished 21-of-46 for 230 yards and 1 TD with 1 INT.
Textor had 6 catches for 130 yards.
CC's Stennis was 14-of-26 for 212 yards and 2 scores with 1 interception.
Sequim outgained Cascade Christian 291-274.
Travis Decker carried 15 times for 61 yards for the Wolves.
The Cougars backfield combined for 62 yards on 32 carries.
Wolves standout receiver Clancy Catelli was slowed early in the contest by an ankle injury, but continued playing after being taped.
CC completed a non-league football sweep of three 2A Nisqually Olympic League teams as the Cougars (3-0) added the Wolves (2-1) to their list of victories in 2009, which previously included Fife 28-20 and Eatonville 34-15.
Next Friday night, Sequim opens Nisqually Olympic league play at Steilacoom (0-3), while Cascade Christian plays Cedar Park Christian in Monroe.
